I remember as a little girl making lists of things I loved. I would cut up magazines and catalogs and cover old boxes and bottles with images of things I loved best. I decoupaged whatever I could with pictures of trees and lacy dresses and sunsets and flowers and fields and picnics. Fast forward 35 years later and I pretty much still love the same things my wild heart loved as a 10 year old girl growing up in the Blue Ridge Mountains of VA. My taste in things haven't really changed much over the decades. My most favorite things are still inspired by nature. I grew up a girl of the forest and mountains but from a very 'proper' family so I was climbing trees in a dress! LOL
I spent entire days during the summer outside with my brother exploring the hills and forests around our house. We would leave at sunrise after a bowl of cereal and stay out as long as we could. We would catch frogs, walk to the pond at the end of our road, climb trees, pick flowers, have picnics, read in our treehouse, watch the clouds, imagine entire kingdoms and live there for the day. We would find creeks and bones and feathers and cool leaves. At the end of the day we would swim under the stars and talk about the moon. All the things I loved best were found outside, including my favorite color green!
I have spent the last week reconnecting my heart to all the things I love best. A retreat with some awesome ladies on a gorgeous piece of property with a magical little creek and nature trails. Then I spent 4 nights in the woods on a lake camping with my kids.
Pretty dresses, walks in the creek, making flower crowns with my girlfriends, watching the sun rise and set over the lake each day, reading in a hammock hidden in the trees at the edge of the lake, maybe even a little skinny dipping! All things that remind me of my childhood, all the things that make me feel happy and free.
I am declaring this the summer of my heart. I will say yes to those things which make my heart feel happy and free. Yes to those things that make me feel like my 10 year old self wandering the forest with my brother, staying up late to swim under the moon, waiting patiently to catch the toad or lizard. The summer of saying yes to all things magical and beautiful! Won't you join me?
